Summer has been off to a busy start for the City. On June
6th, we had the kick-off meeting for the DREAM (Downtown Revitalization
and Economic Assistance for Missouri ) initiative. Progress
is continuing in our downtown with the one new building under
construction and more in the planning process. The City will
improve the parking situation as we renovate the City Municipal
Parking lot later this summer and we have plans to renovate
another parking lot next year.
It has also been a busy construction season for the City
with over $12 Million in new construction projects underway
to include several commercial, multi family and new housing
permits. We are looking forward to welcoming several new businesses
and residents to the City. Several City projects are underway
including improvements to our waste-water plant, sewer line
improvements, electric line extensions, and the new outer
road to the High School. The City recently completed a new
water line extension to the West Waynesville area that will
improve the water pressure and fire flows for residents in
that portion of the City. The new road to the High School
is due to be completed by August and will enhance the safety
for our high school students, teachers and staff with the
addition of a lighted intersection at Ichord Avenue. At our
June City Council meeting, the City approved the funding for
a new Animal Shelter, which is a much needed enhancement for
our community. In addition to funding the animal shelter,
we approved placing $300,000 into reserves to cushion the
City from the impact of minor or major natural disasters and
other emergencies.
Finally, I am very proud of our Police Department and the
help they provided to the City of Joplin, in response to their
disaster. I am also grateful of the support that our Police
Officers received from the local community. Special thanks
to Skyline Cycles for the load of a trailer and 4-wheel vehicles
and Signs in Time for the special signage required for those
vehicles. The vehicles aided them in accomplishing their mission
and allowed them to go places that were not accessible to
normal police cars. I support and thank the many organizations
and people who volunteered their time and effort in support
of the Joplin relief effort.
Thank you,
