The Leonard Wood Institute, or "LWI", is a Fort
Leonard Wood-based, non-profit research organization that
has invested millions of dollars in meeting some of the
Army's most pressing technology needs and at the same has
helped grow the region's and Missouri's defense industry.
LWI's office is located in the University of Missouri Technology
Park on Fort Leonard Wood, one of the first facilities of
its type to be constructed on an active duty Army installation.
While LWI does not operate the Tech Park, it is closely
involved with the University and other organizations in
a partnership to promote and grow the Park and to make it
a key asset for the Army's training and combat development
missions at Fort Leonard Wood.
The
Chamber is working on a community shop local event for the
fall and would appreciate any member ideas. If you are interested
in serving on the event committee please let me know so we
can add you to the list. The next meeting is April 15th at
9 a.m.
I would like to welcome Jen Roberts as the Chamber's Administrative
Assistant. If you haven't met her yet stop by the Chamber
office or plan to meet her at the April Luncheon at the USO.
We would like to wish Jaimie Young best wishes on her new
endeavor and look forward to her staying involved in the Chamber.
Wow
what a turn out for the annual Taste of Pulaski County and
Basket Auction on Saturday March 27, 2010. This was a record
year for this event and has reenergized the whole Chamber
by such a show of support by our community. Thanks to everyone
that volunteered there time to make this such a success. The
food was great, the fellowship was wonderful, the baskets
and other gifts were the best in a long time which all resulted
in a great day for all that attended.
Plans are being made for the Community wide open house on
Friday November 5, 2010. This promises to be a wonderful way
for us to show case all that our community has to offer. The
planning community is coming up with a lot of great ideas
and is a very enthusiastic group. If you would like to become
a part of this committee, please call Cecilia at the Chamber
office.
Born
and raised 45 miles South of Fort Leonard Wood, Ashley Halstead
is native to the area. After graduating from Houston High
School and attending college in Springfield, MO she moved
back home, to Houston, in 2003. After owning and managing
the family company, a computer sales/service store, in Houston
for a few years she obtained her real estate license. Ashley
has been a full time REALTOR with RE/MAX Professional Realty
in St. Robert for the past five years. She enjoys assisting
buyers and sellers in attaining their real estate goals. First
time homebuyers are a particular joy, watching someone finally
own their own home is a great feeling.
Ashley also enjoys participating in the community and trying
to make the area a better place to live. She is a member of
the Rotary Club of Pulaski County, serves on several committees,
and volunteers at the USO on Fort Leonard Wood. In the remainder
of her free time she enjoys cooking, baking, and spending
time with family and friends.
A gentle reminder to update your free listings with the Missouri
Division of Tourism: These listings are for their online website,
VisitMo.com. At the same time if you are a lodging property,
attraction or outdoor activity you will want to notate that
you would like to be listed in the 2011 Missouri Travel Guide.
For more information go to VisitMo.com, scroll to the bottom
of the page and click on Industry.
Starting mid April Karen Hood, Marketing Relations Manager,
will be contacting tourism partners around the county for
an opportunity to advertise in the 2011 Pulaski County Visitor
Guide. All tourism related businesses receive a free listing
within the guide but if you would like to highlight your business
this is a great opportunity. Within your ad you are welcome
to offer a discount or special offer. Ad costs remain the
same as the last 4 years and we will be offering 5% discount
on larger ads that we introduced for the 2010 guide. Advertising
revenues help to pay for the printing of the guide. We truly
appreciate our advertisers. Due to our advertisers we are
able to offer a quality marketing piece for distribution at
Visitors Centers around the state, tradeshows, as well as
mailed to potential visitors which ask for information on
our area from the print advertising that we do.
One
of the targeted industries for Pulaski County includes processing
centers, call centers and data management companies. Data
centers need three S's to operate:
They are Security, Support, and a Skilled Work Force. When
we look at the security aspect we look at mild year-round
temperatures, ample water for cooling, and reliable uninterrupted
power. The support feature is Missouri has the 3rd lowest
electric costs in the U.S., and has high speed lines including
fiber, cable modem, mobile wireless and satellite. In the
Waynesville-St.Robert area Century Link offers Ethernet, Frame
Relay/T1, Multi Protocol Label Switching, and DSL. Pulaski
County has a very affordable skilled workforce with training
facilities.
