The character word for January is:

Quotes:

"Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude." ~Thomas Jefferson

Definition: Attitude; noun meaning a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior.

Happy New Year!

I hope each of you have a safe and Merry Christmas. As I write this, 2014 is winding down fast. We made it and are starting a new year. As I said last month, we are very fortunate to live in a community with so many wonderful people. The many expressions of kindness that are shown throughout the year by so many, truly tells what a caring and giving community we have. Please remember our military serving away from home protecting our freedoms. They are the very reason that when we go to sleep at night, we do so worry free.

With the beginning of a new year, please remember your local businesses and retailers. The Chamber continues planning in cooperation with our local media to make Shop Local and It's All Here is now a year-round campaign.. So before you go shopping out of town or on the internet, think local, our local businesses are the ones that support our community activities and our cities/county sales tax revenues.

The Chamber will continue to be active in our community with many events. Please see our calendar for a listing of our events so you can get it on your schedule now and be ready to participate.

From our home to yours, Paula and I want to wish each of you a very prosperous and Happy New Year!

As always, please feel free to contact me if the Chamber can be of any assistance to you.

Tourism Notes

Welcome to the new year! Last year about this time I wrote about the Route 66 Summit that was hosted by the World Monument Fund. This conference brought many ideas and relationships together across the Route. One key element to conference attendance is follow through, taking what you have learned and applying it to your day-to-day and bringing back that knowledge to your community. One project brought back from this conference is to bring development along our 33 miles of Route 66 in Pulaski County. An initial discussion was held in December where it was immediately seen that there is tremendous interest in moving forward. In fact 6 days later the community of Devils Elbow came together to light the 1923 Steel Bridge for the holiday season! A meeting is scheduled for January 5th to form an organization to oversee development opportunities within Pulaski County along the Route. If you are interested in learning more please give me a call.

The Bureau has promoted this aspect of tourism since our inception via program developments in partnership with our area Route 66 expert Terry Primas with our turn by turn driving tour, free audio tour, a step on guided tour for motor coach tours. Marketing the route in travel and Route 66 publications, various internet outreach, marketplaces and tradeshows to both leisure travelers and groups around the world. Enhancing and adding to Pulaski's Route 66 attributes both old and new will make our destination a major attraction along the route, furthering our marketing efforts.

Update: Last spring the Czech Republic filmed along the route and their new DVD "ROUTE 66 REVISITED" was released the end of November. The movie features many iconic stops to include Devils Elbow and Waynesville. If you are interested in purchasing a copy please let me know. Cost is $10 which includes shipping.

2015 looks to be an even more exciting year in tourism! Find out how you can become involved. Be sure to connect with us Facebook, Twitter, and be sure to subscribe to our blog. (Check out the "quicklinks" at http:www.PulaskiCountyUSA.com) Be ready, focused and plan your strategy to reach groups such as the cavers with the #NSS2015 conference, the Traveling Square Dance conference, MO Special Olympics Indoor Games at Fort Leonard Wood, First Annual JROTC Invitational Drill Meet . Good things...no, make that...GREAT things are happening and it takes all of us to make it happen. Cheers to a great 2015!

Happy New Year!

When Site Selectors for Business and Industry look at communities usually the first question is what buildings and land are available, the second question is usually what skill level is your work force. There hasn't been a method to assess skill levels until now.

The American College Testing company (ATC) has development an assessment comprised of the following; mathematics, reading, and locating information. The employee receives a skill rating after the assessment.

Communities can be designated as a Work Ready Community. Pulaski County is seeking to become a Certified Work Ready Community, and has been approved by the Missouri State Investment Board as a community in progress. For Pulaski County to succeed as a work ready community we must have business participation.

This program demonstrates Pulaski County's dedication and commitment to prepare our workforce for jobs of today and the jobs of the future. A Certified Work Ready Community is one where the supply of ACT National Career Readiness Certificates earned by individuals is matched with a demand for NCRC from employers who either recognize or recommend the credential. There are over 1900 employers in the State of Missouri who are participating.

The goal of Certified Work Ready Communities is to attract, retain, and develop a workforce with the education and fundamental skills necessary to succeed in the 21st Century. There is no cost involved and does not obligate an employer to anything. It simply indicates you have heard of the NCRC and that you would prefer candidates who apply for jobs with your company have certification.

We Need Your Support to Reach Our Goal

From the Banks of the Roubidoux!

Dear Citizens::

A very busy winter season is upon us and the City of Waynesville wishes you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday. I wanted to take my media time this month to give you a look back at 2014 from the viewpoint of the City. We are proud of the work done by our staff and Council to take proactive steps to improve our City.

Infrastructure is not an exciting thing to talk about, but is vital to a well functioning city. This past year, we have built a new water tower to support the Hunter's Point area, as well as West Waynesville; we have purchased a heavy duty, portable generator which will allow us to have back up power for critical city facilities during natural disasters; we have purchased automatic-read meters for the electric system and have begun installing them; we have purchased a SCADA system for our water system, which will allow computer control of our wells and water towers; we continue to update and improve the reliability of our electric grid by rebuilding feeder lines and interconnections; we have done many projects to extend our sewer to make it more efficient and to allow our lines to handle the increased flows from commercial development in West Waynesville.

The City continues to improve our facilities and services. This year we purchased the CODE RED notification system, which has proven to be very valuable; we installed a new Welcome sign at Exit 156; we have entered into a cost-share project with MoDOT to address traffic issues on Route 66; we have worked hard to recover from the 2013 flood and have worked with FEMA for the approval of several important mitigation projects, as well as working with our hydrology engineers to address the issues relating to Mitchell Creek. They have helped us to acquire the needed permits to make drainage improvements in that area. We will continue to complete these projects into 2015. The Cities have continued our improvements to the Regional Airport and also, begun a Master Plan for the Airport. Our Police Chief and department have implemented several new initiatives and have been proactive in reducing crime and accidents in the City. We purchased three new patrol cars, using an innovative lease-purchase program. And we have begun the work to turn the old Cinema building into a new City complex, which will include the Street Department, the Municipal Court and the City Hall. FEMA will fund some of this work, as we move the Street Department off the banks of the Roubidoux. The current City Hall will become the Police Department.

The City has supported several major economic development projects during 2014. They have included the opening of the Patriot 12 Cinema, the new Dollar General store and the beginning of the Phelps County Regional Medical Center, with a planned opening in the summer of 2015. We have also partnered with the Pulaski County Growth Alliance to build a speculative building in the Waynesville Industrial Park. We continue to support the revitalization of the downtown area with the paving and striping of an additional parking lot there and continued support for the Waynesville Downtown Business Association.

Our Parks continue to grow. The City applied for and received a DNR grant to concrete and make ADA accessible the walking trail from Laughlin Park to the Roubidoux Park. We will see the installation of the Trail of Tears exhibit in the February time frame. The Roubidoux Park Stage is taking shape and we plan a dedication in the spring. We also began the plan to replace the playground equipment in the Park with an all-accessible Little Heroes Playground. Fund raising will continue into 2015 and the construction will start once we have reached our goal. The Cities and Fort Leonard Wood have signed a new cooperative recreation agreement.

As you can see it has been an eventful year for Waynesville and we predict the same for 2015. In January, I will give you an update on our plans and goals for the coming year. We hope that 2015 will hold many good things for you and your family. Remember to Shop Local and support your friends and neighbors!

From the banks of the Roubidoux,

Luge Hardman
Mayor of Waynesville
