Welcome to the 2015-2016 Chamber Year!

The 2015-2016 Chamber Year began July 1, 2015. The New Chamber President, Mike Freeman selected "Community Engagement " as the theme for this year. He announced the theme at the annual Membership Social. Below is a photo of the 2015-2016 Chamber Board of Directors showing where they are engaged within the community.

Membership Social & Bottle Auction

During the Membership Social the Chamber said farewell to Board Members Carey Heitman, Brad Budolfson, Marsha Mercer, and Tracy McCord and welcomed Deborah Baker, Josh Deavours, Alana Hancock, and Janel Rowell. Additionally, the Chamber thanked Phil Tackett for his time as Chamber President and welcomed the incoming President Mike Freeman for the 2015-2016 year. This Social also included the Chamber's Bottle Auction. Chamber Members donated bottles with unknown contents. The $3,170 raised will fund the Chamber's shop local ad campaign and Shop Small Business Saturday. The Chamber would like to thank Hampton Inn for hosting the event, Market Basket for providing the food, Citizens Mortgage Company for their sponsorship, and all of the Chamber businesses that donated a bottle for the auction. To view pictures from the event click here.

Any perspective member must attend with a currently active member as their guest.

There are no seating limits for the Quarterly +1 Luncheons so it is a great opportunity to get involved and updated on the community and network with fellow Chamber members. Welcome Chamber members to the July 2015 President column. I hope everyone is having a great summer. My name is Mike Freeman, your newly elected 2015-16 Chamber Board President. I've been engaged as a chamber board member for the past 5 years and look forward to a great upcoming year. I want to especially thank the 2014-15 chamber staff, volunteers, board members plus officers for their service and contribution to your chamber. They worked diligently to represent you and your business during the past year. As the year progresses, I'll be talking about your chamber and the great opportunities for you to be involved. I call that "Community Engaged".

"It's not what the Chamber does for me, but what you do with the Chamber."

Mike Freeman

Chamber Chatter

As we start a new Chamber year I would like to welcome Mike Freeman as our new Board President. I am looking forward to the next year and the new ideas he will bring to the Chamber. I also look back over the last year and thank Phil Tackett for his dedication and commitment to the Chamber. We have a great Board of Directors that work hard to put the membership first in all they do.

As school is about to start the Chamber, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Pulaski County, will present the CHOICES program for the 10th year. This program is presented to all 8th grade classes in Pulaski County. We now need volunteers to attend training at the end of this month to prepare to be presenters. We need enough volunteers to have one in each classroom and a few in reserve in case we need fill ins. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in this program.

The Chamber staff has started to make our fall sponsorship calls and if you have turned in your form for the year we appreciate your continued support. Don't miss the deadline to register for your free booth at the Regional Job Fair on August 27th. This is an opportunity to collect resumes or even interview candidates. The Challenge was moved to September 12th as May is such a busy month for everyone. We are still looking for some station sponsors and teams to play. The Community Pride Night will be on October 2nd at this year's homecoming football game of the Waynesville Tigers. Show your Tiger Pride and become a sponsor! Then the next day we will hold the Frog Race on October 3rd and frogs are already up for adoption.

If you have any questions or concerns please give me a call at 573-336-5121.

President's Message

Theresa Steward

What a fun evening at the Membership Social and Bottle Auction. This is such a great experience to network with other Chamber members. The relaxed atmosphere gives you the opportunity to visit, network and make new friends.

The Social recognizes the outgoing Board members and presents the new Board President and Members. We are very appreciative to Phil Tackett for his service during the past year as the Chamber President. As Mike Freeman, incoming Board President, made mention, Phil isn't a business owner, he is a community minded person who chose to be involved. We are all looking forward to Mike Freeman's leadership for the next year.

Special thanks to Citizens Mortgage for sponsoring this event again this year. They provided a photo booth and we were able to take a fun momento home to commemorate the night. We are very appreciative to the Hampton Inn for opening their doors to allow the Chamber to use their FIRST CLASS facilities.

The Bottle Auction is a fundraiser for the "Shop Local" campaign. Thank you so much for those that donated "bottles". There is a lot of creativity involved in the bottles. Also, thanks to those that purchased bottles to support this campaign. We raised $3,170 for this campaign.

As always, you can't have a social without good food. Thank you to Market Basket Catering for the awesome food - everything was yummy…..yes I might be a little bias!

I would encourage each of you to put this event on your calendar for next year. Come out and make some new friends, visit with old friends, and support the Shop Local Campaign.

Tourism Notes

The 2015 NSS Convention was a resounding success. Both the onsite information booth and Visitors Center were extremely busy answering questions and referring to businesses throughout the county and state. Local referrals included things to do, dining, shopping, lodging, printing services, windshield repair, new tire, even laundry services. A deep thank you to Karen Hood who did a remarkable job building the relationship with these planners to bring this national conference to Pulaski. We are extremely fortunate to have two staff members, Karen and Laura, which are incredibly dedicated to the promotion of our county giving their all and also volunteering their personal time to help the convention planners in every way possible. We appreciate the conference planners for giving us this opportunity and choosing our destination. I cannot say too many "Thank You's" to the Waynesville School District. Their willingness to contract with the planners to use the High School facility allowed this to happen. To walk through the halls of convention headquarters was amazing and impressive. I have always thought we had incredible facilities but to look through at the venue through a convention attendees eyes added a whole other level of appreciation. To the Pulaski County Shrine Club, a deep thank you for being the host campground. This organization continues to offer a top notch venue and services. To the City of Waynesville for their support throughout this entire process, to include the "OK" on W.H. Croaker's spelunking helmet. To Evergreen Historic Automobiles of Lebanon for working with us to give our convention attendees a one-of-a-kind opportunity. And to our community partners, you make our organization proud. We are out here every day promoting Pulaski as a great and welcoming destination and you proved that immensely from the radio shout-outs, engagement during events, land owners working with the Cave Tour Chair, targeted specials, handmade souvenirs, our museums opening extra hours and "Welcome" signage. All of our staff had engaging conversation with hundreds of attendees, and their traveling companions, and all were very pleased with conference, facilities and local businesses and attractions. Grotto's represented came from across the United States as well as several international groups. Several cave tours where held throughout the county and one of our landowners had a guestbook on site and 28 states were resented for that particular tour. A special thank you to Pat Arden, our guest journalist who was here this past week during convention. Her agenda; Convention, military reunion, historic and tourist attractions. She will be releasing multiple articles about the week she spent in Pulaski County USA.

Two additional groups we will see coming to Pulaski County are Sept 3-7 Widows Sons National Gathering which has been organized locally by "BJ" Benton and Sept 11 - 12 the Missouri Route 66 Hub and Spoke Motor Tour (2 nights).

In amongst all of this, normal work and promotion continues. Karen is taking a deep breath after back to back reunions and convention and will dive right into advertising sales for the 2016 Visitors Guide. We are also working on the listings and text, so please take a moment to go to PulaskiCountyUSA.com and double check your listing (lodging, restaurants, and attractions) and submit changes to email@pulaskicountyusa.com. Two additional billboards went up along Hwy 63, just north of Jefferson City and on Hwy 65, just south of I-44. This creative is currently promoting float trips, and will be updated throughout the year with promotion of Pulaski's fall farms and general promotion of the area. The Casey's Gas Pump campaign will continue through August and is placed in 10 locations and at 31 pumps along the I-70 territory. Geo-targeting, keyword purchases, state-wide radio, specialty print placements all are continuing throughout the summer and into the fall. On the Visitor Center side of business, traffic is up over 2014 by 25% through June. We are seeing an increase across the board for their reasons for stopping; 37% increase for general information on Pulaski County, 39% increase in Branson traffic. Reasons for being in the area; 16% increase in those here for graduation, 33% increase Route 66 information. Since I am reviewing stats; Leads received in from marketing efforts are up this year 31% the majority of which has come through the Geo-targeting/Facebook Contest and the Rich Banner Media ad we did in partnership with the Division of Tourism CMI Grant. We have also seen a 17% increase in those stating they stopped in after seeing the Affiliate Welcome sign and a 22% stating it was a billboard that brought them in, those billboards most often mentioned? Antique Trail and Route 66.

The Visitors Center continues to be open 7 days a week through the travel season; Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat-Sun 9 a.m.-3 p.m. We also have a kiosk located outside the door for those stopping after hours. For 24 hour resources of information, brochures, phone applications, calendar of events and quick links to our social media visit PulaskiCountyUSA.com.

I am writing this month's article from a Score Article I received. The article is titled Business Planning: Are you Ready for What's Next? I think you will agree the only constant in life is change. Regardless of what things were like when you began serving customers, it's quite likely that conditions have changed. The economy may have shifted, new competitors may have arrived on the scene, or your mix of marketing tools may no longer be optimal. What's more you have changed. You've gained knowledge, experience, and you are certainly a little older and wiser! However there's always something new that you can learn. The Score article suggests some "tips" to keep your small business on track for long-term growth. Revisit your business plan it is a living document that should be updated periodically. A yearly review is standard operating procedure. If your business is less than 5 years old more frequent assessments should be conducted. A quarterly review would be appropriate for new business. Evaluating your financial statements can also tell you if you need more diversity in your customers and which products contribute to the profit margin. Income statements and balance sheets should be studied monthly. You should watch your industry trends. You must stay current with world and community events, join local business groups like the chamber of commerce, professional organizations, and trade organizations. Lastly, make sure you're mentally prepared and focused to handle the challenges and opportunities that come with growing a small business. You must have the stamina, persistence, and resources to manage your business for long term growth.

From the Banks of the Roubidoux!

Dear Citizens:

Summer has definitely arrived and with it a lot of rain this year. The green all around us is nice. I am honored this year to nominate the Pulaski Planters' Club for their work in our community to beautify and welcome people. The City appreciates their work at our welcome signs and the Post Office area. They put many hours of time and effort into the beautiful displays that welcome people to downtown Waynesville and they will be honored at the annual MRPC Banquet in October. Congratulations to the Planters!

Several major projects are taking shape and should begin in August. Keep your eyes open for the replacement of the Roubidoux Lift Station, as we move the lift station out of the creek bed and make it much more efficient and safe for the Roubidoux. This is being done with help from FEMA/SEMA. We will also be beginning work soon on the last of our low water crossings and replacing the Dyer Street crossing with a bridge. That project is also funded by a FEMA grant. We have completed moving the baseball fields to higher ground and have ordered a new mobile shower house for use at the RV Park and the future Farmer's Market site. We also are working to install a gravel trap at the Tiger Bridge area to slow the accumulation of gravel into the Mitchell Creek area. We are now in the permission stage with DNR. The City continues to work on mitigation issues from flooding and storm water drainage.

The new Waynesville Municipal Center is taking shape and hopes are that we may move into the new facility next spring. The Street Department, the Building Department and the Natural Gas Department have moved in and are doing business there. The crews are now focused on the City Council chamber. I would be glad to take anyone through for a tour, but you must contact me, as it is a construction area and not safe to wander around. We will keep you updated as the months and work go on. Once we move to the new Center, the Waynesville Police Department will move to the current City Hall location.

The Little Heroes Playground has now gone over the half way mark and we have been thrilled to see the community involvement in this worthwhile project. Our thanks to the St. Louis Cardinals for a recent fund raiser and to Sellers-Sexton for a very successful "Driven to Give" program. There are several other fund raisers being sponsored by different groups and the City and our community committee wishes to thank them for their giving spirit. Keep your eyes open for these other opportunities. Little Heroes Playground can be found on Facebook.

Old Settlers' Day 2015 was a huge success and even though very hot, a wonderful turn out made it one of the most successful in recent years. Our thanks to Denise Seevers and her volunteers for their great work. The new Roubidoux Stage was a hit of the day, offering a central location for the entertainment and announcements. Thanks to the Dial family for their donation to the City they loved.

Remember to shop local! Be alert for school starting and watch out for the kids.

Mayor of Waynesville

**Please note** The Chamber of Commerce is excited to have such a large number of its members attend monthly luncheons. Unfortunately, due to the large number of last minute Chamber luncheon attendees a policy has been put into place by the Chamber Board of Directors. This policy started in APRIL 2005; anyone who responds after the R.s.v.p. cut-off time (9:00 a.m. the Tuesday before the luncheon) or shows up without an R.s.v.p. may be charged an additional $10. If an R.s.v.p. is received and they do not attend the luncheon there may be a $10 charged for the meal. The decision was made to charge this amount to compensate our Chamber member restaurants for the last minute adjusts they must make to their menus.

Ribbon Cutting for AT&T Communications Connection - August 14th at 11 a.m. at 151 St. Robert Blvd.
