President's Message

Paula Tackett

Hi!! My name is Paula Tackett.

I am proud to have been chosen as an Ambassador for the Waynesville-St Robert Chamber of Commerce.

My husband, CW5 (R) Philip Tackett and I moved to Fort Leonard Wood in August 2003. We were blessed to have been included in many community activities and subsequently in March 2008, we decided to choose the Waynesville-St Robert area as our retirement home.

We are the proud parents of two daughters: Stephanie Wright (Macungie, PA) and Beth Bellerby (Waynesville) and four grandchildren: Courtney (19), Caden (12), Camilee (10) and Haylie (6).

Throughout our 36+ years of Army life, I have been involved in many volunteer positions to include: Coach/Director of Cheerleading Programs from Youth Services to High School levels; Secretary of Youth Booster Clubs; Advisor/Volunteer for Family Readiness Groups; AFAP and Yellow Ribbon Room Volunteer; various positions in Fort Wood Community Spouses Club; Secretary of Military Police Regimental Spouses Board; Military Police Regimental Association volunteer; Secretary of USO Advisory Council, United States Army Warrant officer Association volunteer; ASYMCA volunteer and most importantly a volunteer for the Waynesville-St Robert Chamber of Commerce.

My husband and I are very actively involved in activities promoted by our local Chamber of Commerce, so, I am very excited to be a member of the Ambassador's Club. The Ambassadors Club serves as the "Welcome Wagon" for this community. I am anxious to become more involved in promoting our community!!

Tourism Notes

Pulaski County has been receiving some great press lately!

Have you seen the St. Louis Post Dispatch this week or how about the summer issue of Show-Me Missouri Magazine's 7 page spread? Did you know we worked with the Missouri Division of Tourism to have a photo shoot held in Pulaski County for a very well known publication... more to come on that 2015. If you've seen the Czech Republic that was traveling Route 66 this past week they are working on shooting a video production. Have you visited the FireballRun.com website? How about the Pulaski County USA blog that is picked up by news sites throughout the state?

Your tourism bureau works diligently to spread the word of tourism and the media is a huge component of our marketing efforts.

Bloggers are also a great media resource. We are working now on a Familiarization Tour with a "Mommy Blogger" She has over 48K views a month on her stories of travel with her children. Mommies are a huge demographic for Pulaski County, they many times are the decision maker in the household of where the family will vacation. Pulaski County makes a perfect choice for families; gentle waterways, history; Route 66, Civil War and military history, shopping and sweet shops!

We had a unique blogger that walked through Pulaski County this past week. "Ian Walks Across America" spent two days in Pulaski County. He began his journey March 1st at the statue of Neptune in Huntington Beach, VA, day 77 brought him to Saint Robert. The next day he met up with a great group from Pathways that joined him for his walk through Waynesville, and by end of day he set up camp with the Catterjee's at Gasconade Hills Resort. Take a few minutes to visit his website and Facebook page and watch his journey across the United States. A special thank you to Baymont Inn & Suites, Saint Robert for offering Ian a comfortable bed to rest in after his 30mile walk from Rolla.

As the official travel season begins, be sure to stock up on information at your businesses! The Visitors Center offers; The official Pulaski County Visitors Guide, Good Times Guide, Phone application, Antique & Sweet Trail, Driving tours of Route 66, Frisco Railroad and Historic Fort Leonard Wood, Veterans Memorial Tour, Waynesville Down Town Walking Tour and a Progressive Dine Around program.

May 27th kicks off the summer season and the Visitors Center is open 7 days a week; Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, Saturdays and Sundays 9pm-3pm. Come by and see us! We have plenty of information on local attractions as well as brochures on things to do throughout Missouri.

Make it a great day!

On May 22, 2014 I filed an application for Pulaski County to become a Missouri Certified Work Ready Community. Individuals can earn a National Career Readiness Certificate. There are four certificate levels; Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Individuals earn their designation by taking three Work keys assessments tests issued by ACT. The three tests areas are applied mathematics, locating information, and reading for information. Those who become certified will have credentials that verify their skills in problem solving, critical thinking, reading and using work-related text, applying information to solve problems, applying mathematical reasoning to work related problems, setting up and performing work-related mathematical calculations, locating, synthesizing, and applying information that is presented graphically, comparing, summarizing, and analyzing information presented in multiple related graphics.

I also attended an Employer Summit in Jefferson City to hear employers' experiences using the NCRC Work keys program. On the program was a company from Washington, Missouri that is owned by a company from India. They selected to open their facility in Washington, because Franklin County is a Mo. Certified Work Ready Community. They were confident there was a workforce to meet their needs. Another company from Joplin, Missouri stated it has saved them money in their hiring process. The NCRC screens applicants and helps them find the right workers for jobs at all levels. There are now over one million certificates that have been issued and are recognized in 40 states. There are now over 1400 employers who are using the NCRC Work keys Program in the state of Missouri. There are 4 counties in Missouri who have obtained the Work Ready Community designation. There are 35 counties in progress to reach the designation. Pulaski County will have two years to reach the goals established by the Missouri Department of Economic Development to be a Missouri Certified Work Ready Community. If you would like to participate in this program email me at director@pulaskicountymo.com.

From the Banks of the Roubidoux!

Dear Citizens:

I hope you are enjoying the nice weather. The City Council recognized the American Legion Post # 331 as "Good Citizens" for their work in organizing and sponsoring the Annual Easter Egg Hunt in the Roubidoux Park. It has gotten bigger and better each year. Our thanks for all your "EGGCELLENT" work!

Other City announcements and updates:

*the Roubidoux Park Stage project has begun, but will not be finished until the October time frame, hopefully, in time for Frogtober Fest.
*the Council voted unanimously to extend fireworks within the City limits to July 3, 4 and 5, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
*the City has installed the first of our "local history" signs. It is located at the Municipal Parking Lot beside the Post Office and highlights
the Baker Hotel on Route 66. This lot will be paved and striped this year.
*the Code Red, our automated notification system for citizens, is close to being operational. Our staff will be training with the software shortly and
the mapping with 911 has been completed.
*the City Hall will now be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day, in an effort to serve our citizens better.
*MoPEP, our utility consortium, has begun receiving solar powered electricity, one of the first in the state. The Butler Solar Energy Farm began producing in
March and supplying the 35 member cities.
*the new water tower at the Industrial Park is being painted.
*the Roubidoux Spray Park is open, with operating hours posted. Enjoy!

The City's financial situation continues to improve over the last several years. The City has completed the fourth month of our new fiscal year. We have a stable and positive cash flow. As of May, the City had fund balances of over $3.8 million, with $1.1 million in restricted accounts and over $1.8 million in our reserve and savings accounts. Since 2005, our bond rating from the S and P Fund has moved from a B+ to an A. This is an outstanding rating for a small municipality and we are very proud of it. Our audits over the last ten years have always been "clean", with very few notations for improvement. Our auditors have made the following observation, "The City of Waynesville has continued to grow and make progress, in spite of a sluggish national economy." Over the last five years, the Council has made several "bold moves" in investing and growing the City. I would also say they were "intelligent moves", as we refinanced several bond issues from interest rates as high as 9% and 6%, to 1% and 2%. In the refinancing, the City has also been able to bundle major projects that had to be done. Many of the projects would have been problematic and would have carried penalities for the City if not accomplished in a timely manner.

The City wishes to say "goodbye and happy retirement" to the Superintendent of the Waynesville R-VI Schools, Dr. Judene Blackburn. Dr. Blackburn has been a good partner over the last eleven years. Recently, the City planned a partnership of installing sidewalks along G. W. Lane Street, as well as planning an alternate road to the high school. These projects are very much needed and with the leadership of Dr. Blackburn, they will become a reality in the future. We wish her many happy years with her family and welcome Dr. Brian Henry on board.

SHOP LOCAL! Have a safe and happy summer season! Freedom Fest on the Square is June 21st in downtown Waynesville.

From the banks of the Roubidoux,

Luge Hardman
Mayor of Waynesville

Chamber Luncheon - June 11th at 11:45 a.m. at El Jimador. Our sponsor will be Cape Air. Please contact the Chamber Office to RSVP before 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 10th. Seating is Limited.

**Please note** The Chamber of Commerce is excited to have such a large number of its members attend monthly luncheons. Unfortunately, due to the large number of last minute Chamber luncheon attendees a policy has been put into place by the Chamber Board of Directors. This policy started in APRIL 2005; anyone who responds after the R.s.v.p. cut-off time (9:00 a.m. the Tuesday before the luncheon) or shows up without an R.s.v.p. may be charged an additional $10. If an R.s.v.p. is received and they do not attend the luncheon there may be a $10 charged for the meal. The decision was made to charge this amount to compensate our Chamber member restaurants for the last minute adjusts they must make to their menus.

Ribbon Cutting for J and K's Restaurant - June 13th at 10 a.m. at 1100 Historic Rt. 66 W. in Waynesville.

"Raise it Up" on Flag Day - June 14th, "Raise It Up! Anthem for America" is a nationwide celebration for the bicentennial of the Star-Spangled Banner on Flag Day.
