Tourism Notes

Spring has sprung and the Visitors Center traffic is starting to pick up! It's been a long, dreary winter and your destination marketing organization has been working diligently in placing the spring market campaigns.

You will see us in the Missouri Spring Vacation Insert (Distributed in the Chicago, Kansas City and St. Louis Markets), ShowMe Missouri, Missouri Life, Show Me Route 66, Route 66, Leisure Group Tour, and various military reunion magazines. You will hear us on local, regional and state-wide radio. Our new billboard creative will rise along Interstate 44.

Planning and preparations for the upcoming Fireball Run that will be over-nighting in Pulaski County October 2nd are in full swing. Our area partners are excited and working hard in their preparations as well.

Route 66 Travelers are starting to flow through the area, graduation are back in full swing, leisure travelers are shaking off the cobwebs, and military reunions are researching destinations to present at their 2014 meetings. It's starting to get exciting!

The Visitors Center is receiving deliveries everyday for the new Missouri attraction brochures. We are encouraging our local tourism business to stop by with their new and updated brochures and rack cards. You would not believe how many brochures that we distribute to our visitors. If you are adding new services or products or changing hours, please let us know. Our Visitor Center staff need to know this information so that we may better serve our visitors and offer referrals to your business.

Take a moment and visit us at PulaskiCountyUSA.com. We have just recently gone through a facelift of the website incorporating our new logo. We did conduct a brand survey and the comments and information received back from previous visitors, inquiries, business and industry associates helped us devise the perfect logo for Pulaski County USA. It shows a mix of patriotism, green for our beautiful outdoors and our love for Pulaski County and this beautiful country we are so fortunate to live in.

Make it a great day!

I recently read an article about the "new economy".

As I look back over my working career it has been the "changing economy". I remember when a farmer who farmed 400 acres was considered a large full time farmer. Today 400 acres is considered a hobby farmer. A large full time farmer farms 4,000 acres or more. Technology has and is changing the way we earn a living. The article I read said that within 20 years the truck driving professional will be gone. At the moment, there are 5.7 million people that earn a living driving a truck. There are driver-less vehicles out there today. A prototype was brought to Fort Leonard Wood for tests. It is just a matter of time when driver-less buses are operated on Fort Leonard Wood. Think about the time gas stations had someone who pumped your gas, checked your oil, and cleaned your windshield. There aren't many of those to be found today! There are now phone apps that allow a person to teach a person to learn about homes for sale. You can even "tour" the home on your phone. Are you old enough to remember the Dick Tracy wrist watch? Have you been to retail box stores that allow you "to check yourself out?" So many things today are "online." You can bank, buy or sell retail items online, and wait there is more to come. The bottom line is be prepared to change the way you do business and earn a living. We must constantly re-educate ourselves and learn new ways to earn a living wage. Education and certifications for the emerging workers in the "new economy" will be more prevalent and demanded in the workforce.

From the Banks of the Roubidoux!

Dear Citizens:

It has been a busy month for the City of Waynesville as we welcome spring weather. Utility bills have been extremely high this year in response to the zero and single digit temperatures we have had. The City's wholesale electric bill for January was $508,072, which was 86% higher than January of 2013, that bill was $271,375. Our higher bill reflects increased usage of the City as a whole, plus the rate increases we experienced due to moving to another supplier. On a positive note, our natural gas rate has remained relatively stable. The City hit a new peak for natural gas on January 6th. The Street Department, and other employees, responded well to several snow events during this winter. As a comparison to the severity of the weather, the City used 135 tons of salt and many tons of sand this winter, compared to 100 tons over the last three years.

In a special meeting, the City Council approved the refinancing of our Natural Gas Bonds. In doing this, we have saved several hundred thousand dollars by lowering our interest rates and by restructuring the financing, we were able to fund several large infrastructure projects. These include the repair of the water tower on Sunset Drive, the remodeling project at the old Cinema building to house our Street and Roads Department and the installation of a new electric feeder line to continue our effort to make our electric service more reliable. We feel this was a prudent move for the City and will allow us to accomplish some projects at the same time.

You will notice that we have removed some of the Bradford pear trees that line Route 66 through Waynesville. Our trees have gotten brittle and become misshapen over the years. They have become dangerous to traffic and many are causing problems in our electric lines. Our plan is replace half of them this year and then, the other half in the coming year. We will be replacing them with Cleveland Pears, which will give us the same color and bloom, but they have sturdier wood and do not grow as tall. Bear with us as we get this much needed project accomplished, with the help of the Lowe's Improvement Heroes Program.

I have appointed a special committee to re-district the City's four wards. The population of our wards has become very unequal over the last twenty years. One ward has an average of 50 voters, compared to two wards with over 300 voters. I have appointed a council member from each ward to serve on this committee: Diana Stanford, Ward 1 - Will Paolicelli, Ward 2 - Ed Conley, Ward 3 - and Mike France, Ward 4.

The City Council had much discussion this month concerning the replacement of our playground equipment in the Roubidoux Park. It is aging and needing repair. An example of what we are facing happened just this week. A slide has cracked and IF we can find a piece to repair it, the piece will cost between $6,000 and $8,000. The staff and I have been in talks with several interested parties concerning the designing and building of a handicapped accessible playground. It would have all the features necessary for special needs children to use the facility, but would be open to ALL children. This inclusiveness is a selling point for me. These projects are very expensive and if approved at the April meeting, the City will be budgeting over $200,000, from our self-imposed Parks capital improvement tax, over the next two years to facilitate this replacement. This is the amount it would cost us to install a playground similar to what we have now. The other monies would be raised through grants and fund raisers, led by the company who builds these playgrounds, "Unlimited Play". You can check out their website for some examples. Most of these parks are built in the St. Louis and eastern Illinois area. I told the City Council that we should take advantage of this partnership to build something special, unique and even, something grand for our kids. This facility will bring families from all over the county and beyond who want their special needs child to swing or slide for the first time.

We are announcing new hours for City Hall. City Hall will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The expanded hours are being experimented with in an effort to serve our citizens better. After 30 to 60 days the staff will evaluate whether it was a useful option. The Council approved the preliminary plat for Walters Subdivision in West Waynesville, near the Memorial Garden Cemetery. The City continues to work with FEMA and recently received a phone call from Governor Nixon, informing us that the state will be adding an additional 10% to the FEMA reimbursement of 75%. We approved the road work for the year with these priorities: Hull Valley, the downtown parking lot, the approaches to both the Polla Road Bridge and the Tiger Bridge on G. W. Lane St. As monies become available we will be looking at our list of other road repairs and hopefully, do another round in the early fall.

**Please note** The Chamber of Commerce is excited to have such a large number of its members attend monthly luncheons. This policy started in APRIL 2005; anyone who responds after the R.s.v.p. cut-off time (9:00 a.m. the Tuesday before the luncheon) or shows up without an R.s.v.p. may be charged an additional $10. If an R.s.v.p. is received and they do not attend the luncheon there may be a $10 charged for the meal. The decision was made to charge this amount to compensate our Chamber member restaurants for the last minute adjusts they must make to their menus
