President's Message

Bryan Kaolowi

My name is Bryan Kaolowi. I've been a member of this community for almost twenty years, and I am now proud to be one of the newest ambassadors of the Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce. I have been married three years now to my beautiful wife, Kristin, who also grew up in the area. She has been working for the USPS on Fort Leonard Wood for the last year. We are the proud parents of a beautiful daughter, which will be attending the Waynesville School District soon. For the last three years I have been the Sales Manager at Aaron's Sales & Lease in Saint Robert, where I have the privilege of providing the highest quality of customer service to the members of our community. I've also served as a combat engineer in the Army and received my training right here on Ft. Leonard Wood. On my down time, I like to get involved in any volunteer work and spending quality time with family and friends. I am very excited to be an ambassador in that it gives me the opportunity to improve our community and be a role model to our future leaders.

Tourism Notes

With the government shut down in October, many facets were affected across the country. We definitely felt this throughout our communities; individual households' and various business industries. The tourism industry as a whole felt repercussions immediately across the nation. Millions of dollars lost in tourism expenditures due to the closing of federally funded tourist sites. This immediately affected tour companies, lodging, restaurants, retail shopping and other attractions as people canceled trips due to the close of these attractions as well as those that cancelled vacations due to their household budgets being slashed. Pulaski County tourism industries also felt the effect with cancellations of individual travel and within 9 hours of the shut-down announcement one of the slated motor coach tours cancelled, which impacted; Devils Elbow, St Robert, Waynesville and Richland, directly affecting; lodging, restaurants, shopping, attractions and tour guide services. We were fortunate as the motor coach has rescheduled for next Spring, but many tourism industries many not recoup the tremendous losses they suffered.

As announced previously this month, Pulaski County will be the host for the 2015 National Speleological Society Conference. Meetings will be conducted over the next 20+ months to solidify the details of this educational conference that is projected to bring in between 1200 and 1500 "cavers'. This group consists of professional's from all over the world, with interests in caving, research, archeology, cave diving, etc., in which they attend seminars and field studies. This conference will impact the county's economy touching lodging, outdoor recreation, restaurants, nightlife, attractions, transportation, shopping and service providers. Stay tuned for additional details and be thinking of ways you can become involved; from welcoming signs throughout the county, to offering ways to extend their stay, special incentives, menu items, drink specials, etc., geared towards our spelunker friends.

In October we provided an afternoon tour of the world of tourism to the Waynesville-St Robert Chamber of Commerce Leadership class. We offered a sneak peek into our world of what we do as a bureau and the ways in which we market, which often times are not seen by our local community as we market outside Pulaski County to bring visitors to our area. We also took time to showcase our wonderful area visiting attractions in Waynesville, Dixon, Crocker and Richland and discussing attractions and events that operate year round. I think the class was surprised at what we do as well as the programs we offer and what awesome activities and hidden gems we have in Pulaski County. If you too want to know what we do, I encourage you to log into our partner section of the website, or stop into our Visitors Center and visit with our staff. We are here to help!

As the destination marketing organization for Pulaski County we work with visitors that are looking for a destination, planning a trip and even those visitors while they are in the area or traveling through Pulaski County. Everything we do, we look at as a visitor would. We analyze our travel experiences; what we enjoyed, what was difficult what enhanced the trip. You can do this too! How many of you travel for vacation or business? Think back to those times - what did you do during your travels? What made that time memorable? Was it the gracious welcome you received? Was it the helpful and memorable people that you met? Was it the beauty, the attractions, cleanliness, clear signage? Was there special services or fun activities that enhanced your travel? How can you incorporate your experiences as a traveler into your business or organization that you are involved in to enhance tourism in your community?

Don't forget to stay connected with tourism by visiting our website; PulaskiCountyUSA.com. You will find quick links to our calendar and social media outlets. Be-in-the-knowof area events, attractions, and our marketing efforts. You will also find information on groups and reunions visiting Pulaski County and I encourage you to roll out the red carpet and welcome these special visitors to our great county.

Make it a great day!

I attended the 2013 AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition October 21-23 in Washington DC. The opening ceremony is very impressive. The United States Army Band and Choir performed. There were renditions of soldiers throughout history starting with the Revolutionary War to present day
in Afghanistan. It brought back memories to me as I was in the Army Missouri National Guard during the Vietnam area. Each era had soldiers dressed in their time period. As I walked the Exposition Hall it appeared that there was about the same amount of exhibitors as previous years. The amount of displays is tremendous and takes hours to walk the exhibit halls. Monday evening the Fort Leonard Wood Chapter and the St. Louis Chapter of AUSA held a meeting at Clyde's Restaurant. We heard comments from LTG Robert B. Flowers US Army Retired. Tuesday morning the Committee of Fifty Breakfast was held at the Senate Russell Building hosted by Senator Blunt. General Cone, the TRADOC Commander was the featured speaker for the breakfast. He made it clear that some difficult decisions were going to be made. I was able to attend several seminars on doing business with different Government Agency's. Monday the session had a panel made of Army, Air Force, Navy, and Defense Logistics Directors for Small Business Procurement. Tuesday the session I attended was on Prime Contractors and Sub contracting with them. I learned that large contractors depend on small contractors for a large portion of their business. The Wednesday session I heard from MG Todd T. Semonite Deputy Commanding General and Deputy Chief of Engineers from the Corps of Engineers. The Corps of Engineer Office for our area is at Kansas City, Mo. I now have an Army Small Business Directory at a Glance file which has the contacts to every procurement office. If you are interested in this list feel free to contact me at director@pulaskicountymo.com.

From the Banks of the Roubidoux!

Dear Citizens:

I hope you are enjoying the fall weather. The colors are gorgeous this time of year. The City has spent the month of October saying "goodbye" and "good luck" to Waynesville Police Chief Bob Carter. Bob is retiring on November 1st, after 24 years with the City. He rose from a reserve officer, to patrolman, to sergeant, to assistant chief and in 2005, to being appointed Chief of Police by Mayor Cliff Hammock. Bob spent 21 years in the Army and we wish him many years of enjoyment in his third career: retirement. Bob will be honored at a City luncheon on October 30.

ONGOING PROJECTS: The City Council approved the financing package for the T Highway/Rt. 66 Lane project at the October meeting. This project will be financed through a state funding mechanism. Half of the cost will be paid by MoDOT and the City will finance the remaining cost over a ten year period. This project will not begin until 2015.
A water tower will be built on the Waynesville Industrial Park property across the Interstate. This should begin shortly.
Sidewalks have been installed on the Old H Bridge project. Hand railings will follow shortly, as we finish this project.
The City has hired Benton and Associates to engineer improvements and changes to the Mitchell Creek area, as well as design mitigation for the water coming from across the Interstate. This engineering cost will be funded in part by FEMA.
The City sewer is being extended to the new cinema project. We expect a groundbreaking for the Phelps County Medical Clinic on November 15th. Watch for details.

The City received news in October that Waynesville has been chosen as the site of the National Speleological Association's national meeting in July of 2015. We are excited about this event and the opportunity to showcase our area. The NSS are cavers and they are thrilled to be coming to one of the most cave rich areas in the Midwest. They have partnered with the Tourism Bureau, the City, the Shrine Club and the Waynesville School District to offer sites and seminar locations for the more than 1500 participants expected to attend this annual event.

Waynesville will also be the host of the South Central Mayor's group. With the mayor of Lebanon, I helped to facilitate the first meetings of this group. We met in Lebanon for our first meeting and then recently, in Rolla. I will host the mayors at Hopper's in downtown Waynesville on November 7th. We will be discussing revitalization of the downtown area and the recent flood event. This is a great opportunity for networking with towns as far away as West Plains and St. James.

The City continues to work on our new budget. The Council recently voted to change our fiscal year from April to January. This makes our budget year coincide with the calendar year. We have had several meetings with department heads and plan several good projects in the year ahead. We will give more details as the budget takes shape. At the October Council meeting, the Finance Committee reported $4.3 million in City accounts and $1.8 million in reserves.

Several new stores have opened in Waynesville and we welcome them to our City. REMEMBER TO SHOP LOCAL!

From the banks of the Roubidoux,

Luge Hardman
Mayor of Waynesville

The parade will step off at 11:30 a.m. and will go from the Municipal Center, turn right onto Missouri Avenue, turn left onto Old Rt. 66, turn around at Citizens Mortgage Company, and end at the St. Robert Community Center.

Chamber Quarterly +1 Luncheon - November 13th at 11:30 a.m. at the Waynesville Career Center. Our sponsor will be Pulaski County Sewer District. Please contact the Chamber Office to RSVP before 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 12th.

**Please note** The Chamber of Commerce is excited to have such a large number of its members attend monthly luncheons. Unfortunately, due to the large number of last minute Chamber luncheon attendees a policy has been put into place by the Chamber Board of Directors. This policy started in APRIL 2005; anyone who responds after the R.s.v.p. cut-off time (9:00 a.m. the Tuesday before the luncheon) or shows up without an R.s.v.p. may be charged an additional $10. If an R.s.v.p. is received and they do not attend the luncheon there may be a $10 charged for the meal. The decision was made to charge this amount to compensate our Chamber member restaurants for the last minute adjusts they must make to their menus
