Character Word of the Month

Beginning in November 2012 the Chamber partnered with the Waynesville School District in promoting their character word of the month. Each month a character word is chosen to be the focus of character development. The Chamber is encouraging its members to apply this word within their business each month. Businesses can put up a sign or put the word on their marquis as well as encourage employees to focus on what the character word means to them.

The character word for March is:

Accountability is a noun meaning the state of being accountable, liable, or answerable. Being accountable is an adjective that means being responsible for action.

What does accountability mean to you, your business, and the community?

Chamber Business Showcase

On March 1st the Chamber Surprise Patrol visited two Chamber member businesses to recognize them as the Chamber Business Showcase member recognition program recipients for March. The March Business Showcase recipients are Life Care Center of Waynesville and Southern Spice Cafe. The Surprise Patrol visited both businesses and dropped off a special sign that will be displayed throughout the month. Business Showcase recipients are drawn each month. The Surprise Patrol will be out again in April to recognize the next recipients.

Greetings everybody! The Community Leadership Banquet was held on February 15, 2013 and we had tremendous turn out. Congratulations again to all the nominees and winners. All of you are winners and our Community owes each of you a huge thank you. To all our volunteers-Job well done!!!

The Chamber will graduate its first class from the Leadership Pulaski County program on February 28, 2013. This, several month training program has improved their leadership skills, and given them valuable insight to our great community. Congratulations to those graduates and to our Chamber staff for a great program.

As we move forward in 2013, we need to stand united in our community endeavors, whether that is in business, our community volunteer work, our support of this area and the military. The future is bright but we must present a united front as we move through these uncertain times. Just remember, we are all in this together.

Sequestration and military cuts are on all of our minds. Writing our Congressional leaders and letting them know your feelings and the impact on our community and the military is a great way to stay involved in the political process.

As always please feel free to contact me if the Chamber can be of any assistance to you.

Your Pres.,

Mike Dunbar

I attended the ICSC Heartland Idea Exchange in Kansas City, Mo. January 31, and February 1. The retailers expanding for 2013 were present to inform of their requirements for sites. I visited with three retailers who have looked at our area and indicated they haven't found a site or building. However, the area is still on their radar. There was much discussion about the lost sales tax from online sales. There has been legislation introduced at the federal level named Market Fairness Act. The State of Missouri has also introduced legislation to recover lost sales tax from online shopping. It is estimated that in 2012 the State of Missouri lost 210 million dollars of sales tax from online sales. I have had several calls for warehouse space this month. If anyone has warehouse space for sale or lease please contact me.

The motor vehicle and license office will receive new equipment for driver's license and non-driver identification cards March 11, 2013. The equipment will be installed Wednesday March 13, 2013 after close of business. The first day of operation will be Thursday March 13, 2013. I attended the Missouri Economic Development Council winter conference meeting in Jefferson City. The MEDC went on record to support the following: The use of tax credits as incentives, funding the Missouri Partnership, funds for workforce training, efforts to resolve the transportation infrastructure crisis, and legislation that creates a business friendly environment.

NOTES FROM THE ROUBIDOUX

Dear Citizens:

Our monthly City Council meeting was cancelled on the 21st and rescheduled for the 28th, so no news from the Council this month, as I have to turn this in on the 24th. The weather has been interesting, to say the least...only in Missouri can you see "Thunder Sleet". I hope that you all weathered the storm well.

News this month that the City of Waynesville was awarded a Cost Share Grant from the National Park Service to complete our Trail of Tears exhibit in Laughlin Park. We will be building an interpretive walking trail, as well as the exhibit site itself. This project has begun, along with the sidewalk project, and you can see the beginnings of it in Laughlin Park. We are excited about this addition to the downtown area. The Pulaski County Tourism Bureau has partnered with us on two separate occasions with this project and we want to thank them for that support.

Work has begun on correcting the low water crossing problem on Old H Highway, near the tennis courts. This is our number one goal this year, as this area hinders the traffic to the high school during the rainy season. The City has hired Barton Engineering to design the project. The plan is to build this during the summer months, while school is not in session. Details will follow, as this will affect our Hull Valley and Mitchell Heights residents. This is a much needed improvement to that area.

Waynesville resident, Emily Crabtree, a third grader at Freedom Elementary, has been chosen to be the Statewide Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We are proud of Emily and wish her the very best on her year-long adventure. One of her fund raising events is in Bolivar on April 27th and she encourages her Waynesville friends to support this event. If you are interested, please call 417-866-5117. Emily will be honored at the next City Council meeting. She is the daughter of Tara and Steve Crabtree.

Work continues on the Waynesville Industrial Park and we are seeing interest in the area. The City is bringing utilities and working on the street infrastructure in this new area across the Interstate. The City is beginning a speculative building project with the Pulaski County Growth Alliance. The end goal is, of course, to create jobs and business in that area. Billboards are also announcing the upcoming work on several projects on G. W. Lane Street, near the high school. The spring weather will bring official groundbreaking dates.

The Council is expected to approve the appointment of nine citizens to the Waynesville Community Foundation Board. This 501 C 3 foundation is a needed instrument for grants and other projects within the City. This allows tax deductible donations to City projects. New members of the Board will be Marilyn Odle, Judy Laughlin, Jan Primas, Tim Berrier, Barbara Wall, Marti Bishop, Pam Cox, Dee Matson and Marilyn Mathews. We appreciate your time and effort for this worthwhile organization.

Be sure and SHOP LOCAL and keep your money at home. Remember the St. Patty's Fest on the Square, March 16th, 11:00-5:00, sponsored by the Waynesville Downtown Business Association.

From the banks of the Roubidoux,

Mayor Hardman

Dive in to a Summer Job! The City of Saint Robert Tiger Typhoon Aquatic Center is now recruiting for Head Lifeguards, Lifeguards, and Concessions/Pool Attendants. Visit St Robert City Hall or go online to www.saintrobert.com for more information!

On Saturday, February 2, 2013 the City of St. Robert hosted their very first Little Princess Party. The event was from 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the St. Robert Community Center. Upon their arrival the girls were introduced to a special guest who traveled a great distance to visit with them, Cinderella (Brandy Becht). Cinderella assisted in the sash pinning and gave each Little Princess a rose. One by one they were formally announced and had a photo taken under the lighted archway.

Afterwards the girls were able to partake in a friendly game of "Kiss the Frog" and "Snow White's Poison Apple." Both games are a Princess version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey and Hot Potato. The girls had a lot of fun playing these games and worked up quite an appetite.

Colton's Steakhouse in St. Robert graciously donated fruit punch and cups for all participants. Ronda Risner, owner of Sugar Me Bakery, was generous in baking 50 Princess Cupcakes and 1 Large Castle Cake for the girls and parents to enjoy. The remainder of the event was spent at the craft tables. Foam Princess Tiara's and Foam Picture Frames were available, along with crayons and coloring sheets. The girls seemed to really enjoy being able to work on these crafts together, with their parents and their Princess celebrity.
This event was a huge success! All participants, parents and even coordinators had a great time. The City of St. Robert gives a heartfelt thank you to Ronda Risner of Sugar Me Bakery, St. Robert Colton's Steakhouse and of course, Cinderella (Brandy Becht). This event would not have been possible without your help and support.

The City of Saint Robert would like to reminder its citizens that winter storms can be trying for all of us, motorists, residents and snowplow operators alike. Our goal of keeping streets open, keep essential traffic moving and returning streets to safe, travelable conditions quickly can only be accomplished with your help. Illegally parked vehicles are the biggest obstacle that effective snow removal efforts. The only street that parking is allowed during inclement weather is the North side of Hoyle Street. Vehicles that violate the winter parking ban or otherwise hinder snow removal are subject to be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense, Ordinance #2328. Please support our efforts by parking your vehicle in conformance with the inclement weather parking ban. When a snow storm begins, the Public Works Department responds by salting the routes. Salting these roadways serves two purposes: to keep traffic moving, and to help prevent snow from bonding to the pavement. The City's policy is to plow the full width of the street, curb to curb, during each storm. Once snowfall has stopped and plowing is winding down, salt trucks begin post-storm salting. Streets are salted to achieve bare pavement conditions and sanded to improve traction. While we try to minimize the amount of snow that gets plowed into driveways it is unavoidable. Clearing driveway openings is the responsibility of the property owner. Plow blades cannot be lifted as they pass by a driveway. Snow will be plowed into driveways as we perform curb-to-curb plowing. You may wish to clear your driveway several times during the storm or wait until the storm and plowing activities have ended. Shoveling, plowing or blowing snow back into the street when clearing driveways and sidewalks is prohibited by city ordinance #2158. By working together, we will be able to provide the important services of our winter maintenance program- Keeping streets open, keeping essential traffic moving and returning streets to safe travelable conditions quickly. Your support and cooperation is essential and greatly appreciated.

Also, The City of Saint Robert has a lot of exciting upcoming events, everyone is encouraged to attend.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on March 23, 2013 starting at 1:00pm on the City of Saint Robert Municipal Golf Course. Age groups for hunt: 0-2 Years, 3-5 Years, 6-8 Years, and 9-12 Years. Bring your Easter Baskets and Cameras for photos with the Easter Bunny!
