Leadership Pulaski County

On December 13, 2012 the Leadership Pulaski County Class spent the afternoon of their fourth session volunteering at the Angel Store. The class voted to do a volunteer service project for the Good Samaritan Center and chose to spend an afternoon helping with their Christmas gift program. Class members helped greet shoppers, pick out items, wrap presents, and stock shelves.

The focus of the class's fourth session was volunteerism and community service. Speakers representing several non-profit organizations participated in a panel discussion of volunteerism within Pulaski County. The class also discussed the importance of giving back to the community in order to make it a better place for everyone.

Character Word of the Month

Beginning in November 2012 the Chamber partnered with the Waynesville School District in promoting their character word of the month. Each month a character word is chosen to be the focus of character development. The Chamber is encouraging its members to apply this word within their business each month. Businesses can put up a sign or put the word on their marquis as well as encourage employees to focus on what the character word means to them.

The character word for January is:

Attitude is a manner, disposition, feeling or position with regard to a person or thing. Attitude can also be a tendency or orientation, especially of the mind.

What does attitude to you, your business, and the community?

Chamber Business Showcase

On the January 2nd the Chamber Surprise Patrol visited two Chamber member businesses to recognize them as the Chamber Business Showcase member recognition program recipients for January. The January Business Showcase recipients are Anytime Fitness and Mercy Therapy Services. The Surprise Patrol visited both businesses and dropped off a special sign that will be displayed throughout the month. Business Showcase recipients are drawn each month. The Surprise Patrol will be out again in February to recognize the next recipients.

Tourism Notes

The 2013 Marketing plans have been set! Anytime that you would like to see what marketing efforts the Tourism Bureau is reaching out in, simply log on to our industry partner section of the website. Our efforts continue to grow in outreach in a variety of marketing outlets. From internet presence of the website, keyword purchases, app store, banner ads, target and niche market email blasts, social media outlets and online magazines to print magazines and inserts, organizational and association membership directories, radio, cable television, billboards, tradeshows and brochure distribution. We reach out to the leisure traveler as well as specialized travelers such as motor coach, bank travel clubs, reunion groups, sporting event planners and media outlets. We analyze what we do and how we can make the most impact. Many times the local community does not see what we do, as we are spending our marketing dollars in outer markets to bring visitors to the area. Our efforts are seen statewide as well as in key markets and states; Illinois, Oklahoma and Kansas, United States wide and in some cases internationally. Many of our efforts are geared towards specific hobbies or interests such as outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs and Route 66er's. The Visitors Center is also a fantastic marketing outlet as well! How so, you ask? In several ways! We will distribute your brochures and we also make referrals every to visitors that call or come in the center. We want to provide the most current and helpful information to our visitors and keeping us in the "know" allows us to do that. We are also able to share this information through many channels; speaking engagements, tradeshows, media releases and more.

You may also keep up-to-date on what is going on in the community and the exciting things we are doing as your destination marketing organization by joining us on our social media outlets. Find us by searching for PulaskiCountyUSA, from Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and Google+. For a quick link to our social media visit our website PulaskiCountyUSA.com

2013 is approaching and the end of December we will have the 2013 Official Visitors Guide for Pulaski County. You may take a sneak peak and view it online on our website at PulaskiCountyUSA.com. The 2013 Missouri Travel Guide has been delivered and is available to pick up at the Visitors Center. Other destination guides will be arriving over the next month or so.

Pulaski County Tourism Bureau staff will be out and about representing tourism in Pulaski County over the next few months. We will be attending outdoor enthusiast's shows in Kansas City, St. Louis and Chicago, and St. Robert, as well as a Working Women's Show in St. Charles. Other shows geared towards the motor coach business are also planned; Bank Travel, Heritage Club, Missouri Bank Travel.

Upcoming events in January include the Kickapoo Trace Muzzleloader Tradeshow and the Waynesville-St. Robert Chili Cook-off and Bluegrass in the Barn. Also mark your calendars for opening night of PFAA's performance of Wuthering Heights and The Ark's Women's Expo the first weekend of February! Don't forget you can share our calendar listings by visiting the calendar at PulaskiCountyUSA.com and clicking on the specific event you want your friends and family to know about.

I am forecasting that Pulaski County will see tax revenues increase in 2013. There are several projects that will start and finish in 2013. Those businesses will add additional revenues. I think the unemployment rate will average close to 8% for 2013. If the weather cooperates agricultural business should have a good year. There is $545 million dollars construction ongoing on Fort Leonard Wood. This will provide good paying jobs for the area and a demand for goods and services. The Waynesville Industrial Park will open more opportunities. I expect new buildings for the park and the Pulaski County Growth Alliance will make an application for a Spec Building project. We will continue to target military related businesses, homeland security business, data and call centers. These industries match our workforce in the area. Relationships building with the targeted industries are crucial to success. Therefore we will be attending trade shows and advertising to those targeted industries in 2013. The Entrepreneur Club will continue to be an integral part of our economic development efforts in 2013. We believe that new startups will bring new investment and jobs to the area. The Pulaski County Growth Alliance will continue the management of the Waynesville Motor Vehicle and License Office in 2013. We welcome your suggestions on how to improve service. If the Pulaski County Growth Alliance is to reach our goals we need to increase our membership base. The board of directors designed an investment schedule to fit any business budget. If you would want to participate with the Pulaski County Growth Alliance contact us at 573-336-2123.

NOTES FROM THE ROUBIDOUX

Dear Citizens:

The Christmas season was a wonderful time for the City of Waynesville. Some say the largest Christmas parade ever witnessed was sponsored by the Waynesville-St. Robert Lions' Club. The annual Christmas on the Square was a huge success with estimates of 4000-5000 people attending the first Christmas event sponsored by the newly formed Waynesville Downtown Business Association. Thanks to all our volunteers who work hard to offer these events to our community. The Nativity Scene was lit that night and continues to float above the downtown area, reminding us of the real reason for our Christmas celebrations.

Municipal election sign-ups have opened and will run until the close of business on January 15. If you are interested in serving with local government, there are positions open in each of the four wards. Please call City Hall with any questions.

Recently our state DREAM consultant visited City Hall and met with the local DREAM committee. Andy Struckhoff brought many good ideas for making our downtown area more attractive and welcoming. One idea involves planning and implementing a way finding signage program for our downtown area. We hope to plan that in the coming year and work toward implementation in 2014. He also brought results of a retail/business analysis, which included many interesting notes about potential businesses. The DREAM designation has brought many good ideas and networking opportunities for the City.

Our Safe Routes to School Sidewalk project is going well and as they finish the sidewalk project, Maggi Construction will be installing vintage lighting along Rt. 66 from the downtown stop lights to the Roubidoux Bridge. This project also includes lighting the Roubidoux Walking Trail, building new sidewalks off Rt. 66 into Laughlin Park and the building of a Trail of Tears exhibit in Laughlin Park. Once completed, the City will work with the National Park Service in the coming year to install an interpretive walking exhibit and exhibit panels at the site itself. Tourism is a major goal of the City and this project will place us prominently on the National Historic Trail.

We are planning the building of a stone welcome sign at the corner of Beasley's Heating and Air Conditioning on Highway 17 North. The Beasley family has offered, without cost, an easement to allow this sign to welcome people to our City. Thanks to them for being good citizens. As the weather permits, we will begin this project.

In January, we will be reviewing our goals for the coming year and the accomplishments of the City staff during 2012. We have been very busy and expect 2013 to be more of the same.

We look forward to more excitement in the New Year with the appearance of Lindsey Yenter on the NBC show, "The Bachelor". Lindsey is the daughter of Commanding General Mark Yenter and his wife, Lisa, from Fort Wood. Once again, Waynesville and the community will be highlighted on national television. Good luck to Lindsey!

Happy New Year to everyone! Be safe and enjoy your family and friends.

From the banks of the Roubidoux,

Mayor Hardman
