Character Word of the Month

Beginning in November 2012 the Chamber partnered with the Waynesville School District in promoting their character word of the month. Each month a character word is chosen to be the focus of character development. The Chamber is encouraging its members to apply this word within their business each month. Businesses can put up a sign or put the word on their marquis as well as encourage employees to focus on what the character word means to them.

The character word for February is:

Honesty is a noun meaning the quality or fact of being hones; uprightness and fairness. Honesty is also truthfulness, sincerity, frankness, and freedom from deceit or fraud.

What does honesty mean to you, your business, and the community?

Chamber Business Showcase

On February 1st the Chamber Surprise Patrol visited two Chamber member businesses to recognize them as the Chamber Business Showcase member recognition program recipients for February. The February Business Showcase recipients are Comfort Inn and Blue Heron Properties. The Surprise Patrol visited both businesses and dropped off a special sign that will be displayed throughout the month. Business Showcase recipients are drawn each month. Greetings everybody! The Chamber office is going to have an extremely busy month. The Community Leadership Banquet will be on February 15, 2013. The Banquet is a great event, which allows our Community to say thank you for the hard work and dedication that our volunteers' demonstrate on a daily basis.

The Chamber will also graduate its first class from the Leadership Pulaski County program. This group of leaders has participated in a six month training program that has improved their leadership skills and about given them valuable insight to our great community. Congratulations to those graduates and to our Chamber staff for a great program.

As we move forward in 2013, we need to stand united in our community endeavors, whether that is in business, our community volunteer work, our support of this area and the military. The future is bright but we must present a united front as we move through these uncertain times. Just remember, we are all in this together

As always please feel free to contact me if the Chamber can be of any assistance to you.

Your Pres.,

The Polar Meltdown Chili Cook-off was another year of fun and success. The weather was a little warm for chili but we were grateful for those that came out to support this event. We also raised enough from the People's Choice award donations to present five scholarships this year to high school seniors. The Community Forum was an informative night and we appreciate all our guest speakers and Mike Dunbar for moderating the event.

Next on the calendar is the Leadership Awards Banquet. We have a hard working group of nominees this year for Citizen of the Year. Plan to attend to hear what they have given to our community and who this year's winner will be. There are also several other awards presented during the event as well as honoring all of our community leaders for all they do.

Have you scheduled your Chamber Ribbon Cutting? If you are a new member and would like a Ribbon Cutting give the Chamber a call. Ribbon Cuttings help bring Chamber members to your business and provides you with media coverage. If you have decided not to hold a Ribbon Cutting let us know so we can provide you with your Chamber Membership Plaque that can be displayed at your business.

We would like to thank the members that have made the commitment to sponsor our events in 2013. If you have not already done so please show your support for the Chamber by faxing us your signed sponsorship form and helping to make our events successful. We are currently preparing for our upcoming fundraiser the Taste of Pulaski County & Basket Auction. We will be calling all those that have not filled out a sponsorship form and asking for your help.

If you have any questions or concerns please give me a call at 573-336-5121.

NOTES FROM THE ROUBIDOUX

Dear Citizens:

The New Year has begun for the City, full of promise and full of high expectations for even better things for our citizens. There were many goals achieved in 2012 and even more on our list of objectives for the new year. 2012 saw a new animal shelter, a new website, the purchase of new park property and the building of a new pavilion and toddler playground in Roubidoux Park, the completion of the waste water upgrade, the addition of $500,000 to reserves, the upgrade of electric feeder line # 1, the beginning of the Waynesville Industrial Park, the reduction of crime and drug trafficking in the City, the completion of several airport grants and the forming of the Waynesville Downtown Business Association.

2013 will see the completion of the Safe Routes to School Sidewalk and the Trail of Tears/Bridge Lighting project, the building of a bridge/culvert project on Old H Highway, the planning of the T Highway Intersection/MoDOT Cost Share project, the building of welcome signs on Highway 17 and West Waynesville, the paving of the second downtown municipal parking lot and a continued focus on commercial development in West Waynesville and on the downtown square.

The City has begun its budgeting process for the coming fiscal year. Departments and supervisors are meeting and prioritizing their needs and projects. Last year's budget was $16.2 million and we expect the same, or more, this year.

Discussion continues concerning one way traffic around the downtown square. Several issues have been addressed and action should be expected in the next few months. This is on the agendas of three of our committees. Several stakeholders have already expressed their support of this action, including the Pulaski County Sheriff, the Post Office and the Waynesville Downtown Business Association.

A recent meeting with MoDOT concerning traffic congestion in the City has led to the Council approving our application for a Cost Share program with MoDOT to build a three lane road from the I Bank area to the T Highway intersection. Included in the project will be a large roundabout to address the problems at Pioneer Ridge, as well as the T Highway intersection. Another announcement involves the traffic from Hunter's Point onto H Highway, headed to Polla Road. MoDOT announced the building of a signal light at that intersection to allow people from Hunter's Point to get onto H Highway.

The speed limit on Ichord Avenue was changed in November and with the approval of MoDOT, the signage is expected this week. The speed limit will be 35 mph. The Police Department will position the speed trailer along Ichord in an effort to inform the public. They also plan an announcement to the high school students. Heads up!

The sidewalk project continues, but the cold weather has delayed work. We also are deciding on options to repair the water tower on Sunset Drive. Electric feeder line work is continuing, as we work to make our electric service more reliable.

I was thrilled to tour the home of Karen Foster this week. Her home is one of ten homes that took advantage of the DREAM grants for modernization and weatherization work. Each home was eligible for $20,000 for such projects as handicapped accessible features, new windows, new doors, storm doors, etc. We are pleased that our citizens were able to use this $200,000 grant. Thanks to all who participated.

Be sure and shop local! March 2, the Cities of Waynesville and St. Robert are co-sponsoring a "Blast from the Past" dance for the family. Proceeds will go to purchase new equipment for our Youth Sports Leagues. March 16 is St. Pat's Fest on the Square, sponsored by the WDBA.

From the banks of the Roubidoux,

Mayor Hardman

The City of Saint Robert would like to reminder its citizens that winter storms can be trying for all of us, motorists, residents and snowplow operators alike. Our goal of keeping streets open, keep essential traffic moving and returning streets to safe, travelable conditions quickly can only be accomplished with your help. Illegally parked vehicles are the biggest obstacle that effective snow removal efforts. The only street that parking is allowed during inclement weather is the North side of Hoyle Street. Vehicles that violate the winter parking ban or otherwise hinder snow removal are subject to be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense, Ordinance #2328. Please support our efforts by parking your vehicle in conformance with the inclement weather parking ban. When a snow storm begins, the Public Works Department responds by salting the routes. Salting these roadways serves two purposes: to keep traffic moving, and to help prevent snow from bonding to the pavement. The City's policy is to plow the full width of the street, curb to curb, during each storm. Once snowfall has stopped and plowing is winding down, salt trucks begin post-storm salting. Streets are salted to achieve bare pavement conditions and sanded to improve traction. While we try to minimize the amount of snow that gets plowed into driveways it is unavoidable. Clearing driveway openings is the responsibility of the property owner. Plow blades cannot be lifted as they pass by a driveway. Snow will be plowed into driveways as we perform curb-to-curb plowing. You may wish to clear your driveway several times during the storm or wait until the storm and plowing activities have ended. Shoveling, plowing or blowing snow back into the street when clearing driveways and sidewalks is prohibited by city ordinance #2158. By working together, we will be able to provide the important services of our winter maintenance program- Keeping streets open, keeping essential traffic moving and returning streets to safe travelable conditions quickly. Your support and cooperation is essential and greatly appreciated.

Also, The City of Saint Robert has a lot of exciting upcoming events, everyone is encouraged to attend. The City of St. Robert would like to remind everyone about our 4th Annual Outdoor Sportsman Show coming up at the end of February! The event will be held at the St. Robert Community Center located at 114 JH Williamson Jr. Drive. The event dates and times are as follows:

Vendors will be at the event promoting their outdoor sports, activities and businesses such as scuba diving, hiking, hunting, fishing, ATV's, camping and much more. There will be live broadcasts and on site concessions for sale. Over 40 door prizes will be given out throughout the two day event!
This event will be a lot of fun and we hope to have a record turnout this year. Every year our Outdoor Sportsman Show grows in attendance, vendors and door prizes and that would not be possible without the support from our local community!
