I have joined the Meramec Region (P-20) Education Council.
The P-20 stands for pre-school to graduate school students.
In order to compete in a global environment Missouri students
not only complete with other United States students, but students
in India, China, and other advancing foreign countries.
Education is a vital part of having a trained work force or
trainable work force for economic development efforts.
Education is a direct correlation for earnings, quality of
life, and health related issues.
A 2006 census survey showed that Missourians age 25- 64 with
a professional degree earned 2.8 times more income than high
school drop outs.
Math and Science core competencies are the cornerstone of
the high-tech, innovated economy.
The P-20 Council is highlighting the importance of (STEM)
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
I will be attending the Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education Summit Wednesday, September 8, 2010 in Jefferson
City in regard to the (STEM) subjects.
Missouri's long term goal is to link and share information
among the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education,
Missouri Department of Higher Education, and the Department
of Economic Development to establish benchmarks and tracking
mechanisms to better assess student's education continuum.
I feel the P-20 Council success will depend on collaborative
efforts between Business and Education Institutions.
From the meetings I have attended there appears a disconnect
between skills taught in school and the real needs for a skilled
work force in the real world.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Schools
seem to revolve around the MAP tests.
I received an email today that these tests may be replaced
by the 2012-2013 school year.
The P-20 Council may have the opportunity to have inputs if
this occurs.
The P-20 Council are tasked at providing better, stronger,
more aligned education and workforce training systems to make
it easier to compete in the new world economy.
