2006 Citizen of the Year Recognized

Joseph P. Krill Jr.

The Fort Leonard Wood Thrift Shop is honored to nominate Mr. Joseph P. Krill Jr. for the 2006 Citizen of the Year Award. Joe has contributed numerous volunteer hours over the past several years in various capacities in support of the active duty and retired service members, their family members as well as our local community. Mr. Krill's tireless efforts are committed towards improving and supporting the lives and welfare of all who serve our local community and our nation.

Mr. Krill is a strong supporter in our community. He is a retired military veteran who has embraced the Fort Leonard Wood Community and made Waynesville his home for over 9 years. He volunteered to serve his country and continues his service to our nation by volunteering and supporting the needs of others. His volunteer support spans over 28 organizations and he has been involved with Fort Leonard Wood and our local communities since his move to the Waynesville-St. Robert Area in 1993. His eagerness to volunteer is apparent in the variety of organizations he supports. He thrives on the challenges and is a passionate problem solver. His enthusiasm and expertise is an asset to those he supports. In addition to his volunteer support his is a devoted husband of 28 years and a father to his son and daughter.

Mr. Krill is involved in multiple organizations that focus on the military community. He continues to be active in the Fort Leonard Wood Army Family Team Building (AFTB) in many capacities. As the Volunteer Program Manager, he was instrumental in providing direction and guidance in addition to managing and actively recruiting volunteers to fill key positions. As Volunteer Program Manager, he served as a direct information conduit between families and the chain of command. In so doing, Mr. Krill helped to educate spouses to the Army way of life and provided necessary feedback to the chain of command. As the AFTB Master Trainer, he assisted in the planning and conduction of Instructor Training Courses at the local level. He was instrumental in helping to sustain the local AFTB program through the sharing of materials, information, expertise and experience. His efforts ensure education and training were provided to the spouses of officers, noncommissioned officers and the enlisted soldiers. This past year, during a shortage of instructors, Mr. Krill stepped up to teach over 180 hours of instruction.

Another vital program to Ft. Leonard Wood is the yearly Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) program that addresses the changing demands of the Army life. He has been a strong supporter of this program and has served in many roles during the week of conferences. He served in such roles as the Logistics Team Chief and Facilitator for the 2005-2006 Ft. Leonard Wood AFAP conferences. He also represented the Maneuver Support Center at the TRADOC and HQDA AFAP conferences as a Facilitator and Issue Support Person.

Mr. Krill still finds time to volunteer in other organizations on post. In 2005, he had impressive recorded hours for the following organizations, Army Community Outreach program - over 254 hours. Army Family Team Building - over 246 hours, Army Family Action Plan - over 185 hours, The House Next Door - over 20 hours, The Chaplain's Widowed Support Group - over 145 hours, the Staff Judge Advocates office-Voting Assistance Officer - over 31 hours, 43rd AG - Voting Assistance - over 17 hours, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Council Volunteer - over 37 hours, the Retiree Council - over 2 hours and the Child Development Center - over 25 hours. He has been volunteered for AFTB, AFAP, Chaplains Widow Support, MWR Council and the Retiree Council for over 6 years.

There are many volunteer support hours he gives for the heart to our community that has gone unrecorded. Mr. Krill is a vital part of our community organization on and off post. All of which highly impact the military and civilian community. The past four year, Joe has volunteered for the Lion's Club with the St. Nick's Benefit. He was their Santa in the past years and a shopper for toys. Joe has been involved with the Tax Assistance Center on Ft. Leonard Wood. One of his duties included was as a tax consultant. Over the past 29 years, he has provided over 400 hours of service for them, here and at other Army posts.

Another place Joe has exhibited his talents is for the American Red Cross. He has volunteered in many capacities, more recently serving on the committee for the Everyday Heroes Dinner. This will greatly impact our immediate community. Another organization that Joe has lent his talents to is the Ft. Wood Community Spouses Club. He is presently an associate member as well as a dedicated volunteer. He has historically been a vital part of the November Craft Fair. He is the one that they can count on to provide the donated foods and run Santa's Kitchen. He has tremendous capacity to help in every aspect of this part of the fair. He is there to set up, cook and serve the food as well as take down and clean up. He makes sure that the leftover food is given to the soldiers that come to help with the take down. No task is too much for him to do. This year Joe has recently taken on the role of the Ft. Wood Thrift Shop Chairperson. He is responsible for chairing the executive council, ensuring that the policies and procedures are carried out, oversees the overall operation of the Thrift Shop. He spends many hours there making sure that everyone and everything is taken care of. He works closely with the manager to ensure it is a great place to work as well as to shop. It is very often on the weekends and holidays that Joe will stop in while the store is closed to ensure that the donations that are outside of the store have been securely placed inside. Joe recently has registered to be a volunteer at the new USO. He feels the importance to reach out in yet another way to young soldiers.

One of his proudest volunteer positions is that of the Vice President for Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County. He has been in this position for the past 2 years and with the organization for 5 years. During this time, he has been a board member; he served on the construction committee, family selection/support committee, public relations committee, and was a construction supervisor.

Joe also has been involved in other organizations in various roles. These include the American Eagle Council, the Waynesville Lodge (Masons) for the past 6 years, the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Knights of Pythias and an advisor to DeMolay.

Volunteering is very important to Joe. He feels that it is his time to give back. Joe doesn't punch a clock when he volunteers, he volunteers day and night, weekday and weekends, serving our communities. Joe keeps himself busy by being a Kraft and Nabisco Merchandiser at the Commissary. He is no stranger there, as many people know him form there. He is always willing to help whenever help is needed.

This nominee's work has impacted the community in many ways; work that may have gone unnoticed, by sheer modesty of this man. Through the warmth and giving spirit that this volunteer displays, day in and day out throughout the year, the military and local community have been blessed. He contributes to the morale and welfare of so many people he come in contact with. The organizations have been significantly affected by this volunteer's attitude and contributions to assist in their well-being. His selfless service to others, gives his the astonishing ability to manager multiple priorities and follow through with extraordinary results.

Fellow nominees for the Citizen of the Year Award included: Kevin Sargent, Joseph Krill Jr., John Greenlee and Tim Berrier.

Prior Citizens of the Year in attendance: Jim Phillips (1999), Ann Jarrett (1990), Rev. Wilbur Harbaugh (1995), Gary Porter (2000), Joseph Krill Jr. (2006), Twyla Cordry (2003), Marge Scott (2004) and Paul Corbett (1985).

The 55 Community Leaders in attendance were awarded a 50th Anniversary Coin in appreciation for their hard work in our community.

Featured Business

Triple K, Inc.

Just about thirty years ago, a local family started a business that has had a visible and lasting effect on Pulaski County. In 1976 the late Keith Pritchard, along with his sons Keith and Kevin Pritchard, started Triple K, Inc. Together the Pritchards have spent the last thirty years molding and shaping the landscape of our communities.

Triple K's first project was work on the parking lot for the new Specker Barracks complex at Fort Leonard Wood. Specker Barracks was one of the many major projects that set the stage for the continued growth of Fort Leonard Wood, and Triple K's participation gave them the opportunity to participate in and to help shape this development.

Over the following decades Triple K has worked on improvements to many roads in our area, improving access throughout the region and opening new areas for development. Their most recent road project was the extension of St. Robert Boulevard, a project that vastly improved access to a major new commercial development in St. Robert.

Triple K has also been involved in other public improvements, most notably the waste transfer station in St. Robert and initial site work for the commercial development along Ichord Avenue. The St. Robert waste transfer station services the entire area and helps keep the cost of waste disposal as low as possible. The major retail development on Ichord Avenue in west Waynesville has spurred growth and improved services for that portion of our community.

In addition to roads and other public improvement projects, Triple K has created two of the best housing areas in our community. Keeping quality and customer satisfaction as their first priorities, Triple K followed their first high quality subdivision, Glen Haven, with their newest project, Highland Woods.

A subdivision in historic Waynesville, Highland Woods offers features generally found only within cities while providing the seclusion and quiet normally found only in the country. Paved streets with curb, gutter and sidewalks are only the start to this outstanding subdivision. Each of the larger-than-normal lots has a tree-filled buffer to the rear, ensuring privacy and unusual quiet. Add in enforced building codes, city utilities and services, and the confidence of planning and zoning, and you have the perfect neighborhood for anyone.

Beginning with Glen Haven, and continuing with Highland Woods, providing their community with quality housing filled with satisfied customers has been a continuing hallmark of the Pritchard family, and an ever-present goal for Triple K, Inc.

I would like to pay special tribute to Erin Sipes for receiving the Fort Leonard Wood Appreciation of Excellence on January 30th. Erin was awarded for all her work supporting Fort Leonard Wood through the Committee of Fifty and the Chamber. I appreciate all she does and know how much she deserves to be recognized. I am also excited to announce that Erin will be returning to the Chamber after her maternity leave. We are fortunate that she has decided to continue to help the Chamber grow and succeed in our goals.

It was exciting to see so many community leaders attend the Community Leadership Awards Banquet last week. I would like to congratulate Joe Krill as the 2006 Citizen of the Year. A big thank you to Ina Fernandez and the Rotary Club of Pulaski County for all the support you provide the Chamber.

I would like to thank the members that have made the commitment to sponsor our events in 2007. President's Message

Greetings. I'am sure most of you are glad January is over. What a hardship it was for so many people around our area with the bad weather and power lines down. Our hearts really went out to them. But there's always a silver lining in every dark cloud. Hotels, restaurants, and businesses that sold items like generators, flashlights, candles, and such, did good business in January. The rest of us just had to want until things got back to normal. But get ready for February. Lots of tax refunds will be coming back this month. DO SOMETHING to get your share! Advertise some specials. Tax refund money generally burns a hole in people's pocket. So don't wait. And for goodness sake, don't forget Valentine's Day. Your significant other won't!! Pay a little now, or you'll pay a whole lot later. Words of wisdom from a married man of 35 years.

Tourism Notes

Ice, Ice, Baby…….

What an unbelievable streak of frozen weather Pulaski County has seen. We hope everyone is okay and things have begun to thaw. The entire Midwest has been affected and the weather even impacted the Kansas City Sport show. Even though attendance was soft on Friday, overall the show was productive. A lot of people stopped to get information about the area. Several were looking for guided hunting opportunities, so if you guide, be sure and let us know. The Chicago show was much better. They didn't have any bad weather, but the Bears game on Sunday made things a little slow. Saturday was busier than ever, though, with thousands in town for the game the next day. St. Louis, Des Moines and Wichita sport shows are next on the schedule. The feedback on the new Visitor Guide has been extremely positive. If you haven't received a copy, please stop by the Visitor Center to pick one up.

The Tourism Bureau has not had any success in finding sports commissioners and sponsors for the "HOOAH Sports Challenge" scheduled for April 27-29, 2007. The event will be held in conjunction with Show Me State Games, Fort Leonard Wood and the Governor's Council on Fitness. Events are open to the public and are for all age groups. The events include; basketball, dodgeball, bowling, golf, paintball, archery, trap & skeet, geocaching and a ½ marathon. The commissioners will oversee the development of their respective programs and will be compensated for their time. The event will also need community support and sponsors. If we are unable to rally support from the local chamber, chamber members, and community, we will not be able to host this event. The event is expected to draw over 750 people for three days. Many of these participants will look for lodging and restaurants during the competition and some will shop and patronize retailers and convenience/gas stations as well. The long-term prospects are to draw 5,000 to the games in the future. The support of the Show Me State Games enables us to market to the 50,000 people that participate in other Show Me Games throughout the state, so 5,000 is feasible. BUT…..the tourism bureau cannot produce this event by itself. There must be a local organizing committee that is willing to produce the event. Sports commissioners, chambers, sponsors, community leaders are needed to join and support the efforts of Tourism, Show Me Games and Fort Leonard Wood. Please contact the Tourism Bureau at 336.6355 to help.

See you at the State Affiliate Welcome Center!!!
