2006 Citizen of the Year Recognized

Joseph P. Krill Jr.
The Fort Leonard Wood Thrift Shop is honored to nominate Mr. Joseph P. Krill Jr. for the 2006 Citizen of the Year Award. Joe has contributed numerous volunteer hours over the past several years in various capacities in support of the active duty and retired service members, their family members as well as our local community. Mr. Krill's tireless efforts are committed towards improving and supporting the lives and welfare of all who serve our local community and our nation.
Mr. Krill is a strong supporter in our community. He is a retired military veteran who has embraced the Fort Leonard Wood Community and made Waynesville his home for over 9 years. He volunteered to serve his country and continues his service to our nation by volunteering and supporting the needs of others. His volunteer support spans over 28 organizations and he has been involved with Fort Leonard Wood and our local communities since his move to the Waynesville-St. Robert Area in 1993. His eagerness to volunteer is apparent in the variety of organizations he supports. He thrives on the challenges and is a passionate problem solver. His enthusiasm and expertise is an asset to those he supports. In addition to his volunteer support his is a devoted husband of 28 years and a father to his son and daughter.
Mr. Krill is involved in multiple organizations that focus on the military community. He continues to be active in the Fort Leonard Wood Army Family Team Building (AFTB) in many capacities. As the Volunteer Program Manager, he was instrumental in providing direction and guidance in addition to managing and actively recruiting volunteers to fill key positions. As Volunteer Program Manager, he served as a direct information conduit between families and the chain of command. In so doing, Mr. Krill helped to educate spouses to the Army way of life and provided necessary feedback to the chain of command. As the AFTB Master Trainer, he assisted in the planning and conduction of Instructor Training Courses at the local level. He was instrumental in helping to sustain the local AFTB program through the sharing of materials, information, expertise and experience. His efforts ensure education and training were provided to the spouses of officers, noncommissioned officers and the enlisted soldiers. This past year, during a shortage of instructors, Mr. Krill stepped up to teach over 180 hours of instruction.
Another vital program to Ft. Leonard Wood is the yearly Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) program that addresses the changing demands of the Army life. He has been a strong supporter of this program and has served in many roles during the week of conferences. He served in such roles as the Logistics Team Chief and Facilitator for the 2005-2006 Ft. Leonard Wood AFAP conferences. He also represented the Maneuver Support Center at the TRADOC and HQDA AFAP conferences as a Facilitator and Issue Support Person.
Mr. Krill still finds time to volunteer in other organizations on post. In 2005, he had impressive recorded hours for the following organizations, Army Community Outreach program - over 254 hours. Army Family Team Building - over 246 hours, Army Family Action Plan - over 185 hours, The House Next Door - over 20 hours, The Chaplain's Widowed Support Group - over 145 hours, the Staff Judge Advocates office-Voting Assistance Officer - over 31 hours, 43rd AG - Voting Assistance - over 17 hours, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Council Volunteer - over 37 hours, the Retiree Council - over 2 hours and the Child Development Center - over 25 hours. He has been volunteered for AFTB, AFAP, Chaplains Widow Support, MWR Council and the Retiree Council for over 6 years.
There are many volunteer support hours he gives for the heart to our community that has gone unrecorded. Mr. Krill is a vital part of our community organization on and off post. All of which highly impact the military and civilian community. The past four year, Joe has volunteered for the Lion's Club with the St. Nick's Benefit. He was their Santa in the past years and a shopper for toys. Joe has been involved with the Tax Assistance Center on Ft. Leonard Wood. One of his duties included was as a tax consultant. Over the past 29 years, he has provided over 400 hours of service for them, here and at other Army posts.
Another place Joe has exhibited his talents is for the American Red Cross. He has volunteered in many capacities, more recently serving on the committee for the Everyday Heroes Dinner. This will greatly impact our immediate community. Another organization that Joe has lent his talents to is the Ft. Wood Community Spouses Club. He is presently an associate member as well as a dedicated volunteer. He has historically been a vital part of the November Craft Fair. He is the one that they can count on to provide the donated foods and run Santa's Kitchen. He has tremendous capacity to help in every aspect of this part of the fair. He is there to set up, cook and serve the food as well as take down and clean up. He makes sure that the leftover food is given to the soldiers that come to help with the take down. No task is too much for him to do. This year Joe has recently taken on the role of the Ft. Wood Thrift Shop Chairperson. He is responsible for chairing the executive council, ensuring that the policies and procedures are carried out, oversees the overall operation of the Thrift Shop. He spends many hours there making sure that everyone and everything is taken care of. He works closely with the manager to ensure it is a great place to work as well as to shop. It is very often on the weekends and holidays that Joe will stop in while the store is closed to ensure that the donations that are outside of the store have been securely placed inside. Joe recently has registered to be a volunteer at the new USO. He feels the importance to reach out in yet another way to young soldiers.
One of his proudest volunteer positions is that of the Vice President for Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County. He has been in this position for the past 2 years and with the organization for 5 years. During this time, he has been a board member; he served on the construction committee, family selection/support committee, public relations committee, and was a construction supervisor.
Joe also has been involved in other organizations in various roles. These include the American Eagle Council, the Waynesville Lodge (Masons) for the past 6 years, the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Knights of Pythias and an advisor to DeMolay.
Volunteering is very important to Joe. He feels that it is his time to give back. Joe doesn't punch a clock when he volunteers, he volunteers day and night, weekday and weekends, serving our communities. Joe keeps himself busy by being a Kraft and Nabisco Merchandiser at the Commissary. He is no stranger there, as many people know him form there. He is always willing to help whenever help is needed.
This nominee's work has impacted the community in many ways; work that may have gone unnoticed, by sheer modesty of this man. Through the warmth and giving spirit that this volunteer displays, day in and day out throughout the year, the military and local community have been blessed. He contributes to the morale and welfare of so many people he come in contact with. The organizations have been significantly affected by this volunteer's attitude and contributions to assist in their well-being. His selfless service to others, gives his the astonishing ability to manager multiple priorities and follow through with extraordinary results.
